Free Hardanger Patterns To Stitch
If you’re looking to try your hand at Hardanger embroidery, these free patterns are a great place to start. All of them contain beginner friendly designs, so even if you haven’t done much of this beautiful embroidery technique before, it shouldn’t be hard to follow along.
Free Hardanger Patterns
The Anchor Book of Hardanger Embroidery

This book is available to borrow from the Internet Archive. (Signing up for an account is free!) It has lots of helpful instructions and clear diagrams for several projects. I suggest starting here to learn the basic techniques.
Kreinik Patterns
Kreinik offers some small Hardanger designs and ornament patterns that are available as PDF patterns. My favorite is this pattern, A Garden In Silk.
Hardanger and Cross Stitch by Flora Klickmann

This book is available as a PDF at the Antique Pattern Library. It contains small Hardanger motifs as well as some Hardanger borders and butterflies.
A lot of the older books on this technique have fewer photos and more descriptive instructions, so this may not be the book to start with if you’re more of a visual learner and you’ve never practiced this technique before. But the designs are beautiful, and you should certainly try them once you’re familiar with some basic techniques!
Hardanger Embroidery: A Complete and Practical Course by Sigrid Bright

Another resource available on the Internet Archive, this book shows different stitches and has a variety of intricate, unique designs. There are patterns for scarves, centerpieces, and more. (Just a heads up: the projects contain descriptive text, but not diagrams.)
Bookmark Pattern
This free pattern is available at Needlework Tips and Techniques. The bookmark features Kloster blocks, eyelets, and buttonhole stitch edging.
This style of embroidery isn’t as common anymore, so I’m very grateful that there are still plenty of resources online to learn. I hope you enjoy the patterns. Please let me know of any other free resources you come across!
If you like these resource roundups, I keep a master list of free embroidery resources with even techniques and styles on my Patreon.
