Embroidery Hoop Frame

Embroidery hoop picture frames are the easiest option because you can finish the back of the hoop like you usually would and then the entire hoop fits inside the frame.

There are a few options online for these types of frames. My favorites are these frames from ACMS needlework shop.

how to use a round embroidery hoop frame
  1. Place the embroidery in the hoop.
  2. Cover the back with fabric (if desired) and trim the fabric, leaving about 1 inch around the edge of the embroidery.
  3. Secure with a running stitch or hot glue.
  4. Place the embroidery in the frame and secure the back.

Round Needlework or Picture Frame

If you purchased a frame that is made specifically for needlework (like this one), it will most likely have a circular piece of wood or board to use.

If you are using a round picture frame that is not made specifically for framing needlework, you will need to cut out a piece of mat board, cardboard, or archival board that fits in the frame. (This is what you will stretch the piece of fabric over to frame it.) Make sure it easily fits without being too snug; trim just a little extra off so you leave room for the fabric.

You may also want to cut a layer of interfacing or felt to place on top of the board. This will add some extra cushioning which is especially important for thin or fragile fabrics.

  1. Cut the felt (and board if applicable) to size so that it fits inside the frame.
  2. Place the embroidery face down on a flat surface. Then place the felt in between the board on the back of the work. Trim the edges so there is about 2-3 inches of extra fabric around the board.
  3. Cut a long piece of thread that is the same length as the circumference of the board. Tie a knot in the end of the thread and begin making a running stitch around the edge of the fabric.
  4. Pull the stitches tight to cinch the fabric to the back as you stitch.
  5. Once you’ve stitched all the way around the edge, flip the embroidery over to make sure the front of the embroidery fabric is smooth, tight, and centered properly. Then secure the stitches along the back with a knot.
  6. Place it in the frame and it’s ready for display!

This is just one way of many different ways to display your work; take a look at this post for even more embroidery display ideas.
