Embroidery Sampler Pattern (FREE)
This free embroidery sampler pattern is the perfect way to practice embroidery stitches in a fun way. Why not make your own piece of hoop art while you’re learning? An added bonus: the finished embroidery of this simple floral design would make a great gift!
There are 10 basic embroidery stitches in this stitching sampler that are all beginner-friendly, and I think they are ones that are good to learn when you’re first starting out. The video further down in this post walks you through how to complete the pattern.
This pattern is just one of many hand embroidery patterns available for free the site.

Supplies Needed
I stitched the design in an embroidery hoop, but you’re not limited to only a hoop: you could also embroider on pillow cases or kitchen towels if you wanted to make the end result more functional.
Regardless of what you end up doing, I highly recommend using DMC threads and an embroidery hoop because both are easier to embroider with.
- an embroidery needle
- 6 strand or Perle cotton embroidery floss- I use DMC embroidery thread
- embroidery hoop
- fabric ( I like to use linen, canvas, or Kona cotton)
- water soluble marker to transfer the design
Embroidery Stitches In The Pattern
There are hundreds of different embroidery stitches, but I have found these basic stitches are great to start with. There is a mixture of embroidery fill stitches and outline stitches that you’ll learn.
- chain stitch
- fly stitch
- back stitch
- buttonhole or blanket stitch
- satin stitch
- french knots
- lazy daisy
- split stitch
- fishbone stitch
- stem stitch
